The four factors that create the color

CloudsIdeally they cover between a third and two thirds of the sky. High, thin clouds catch the light; low, thick ones block it.
HumidityModerate humidity keeps the colors vivid. In very dry air the effect fades, and with too much the sky looks milky.
VisibilityClear air shows the whole range of colors and a clean horizon. In haze, the sunset looks murky.
Wind and rainCalm air and little chance of rain let the sky hold its color. A rain front moving away, on the other hand, often leaves very good evenings.
